About Me

My name is Sylvie Dubois

My professional life has primarily been rooted in academia, where I diligently met all the requirements to rise to a top-tier professor in social sciences. As a dedicated researcher, I successfully obtained funding from prestigious agencies in both the US and Canada. Throughout my career, I've had the honor of mentoring numerous students, educators, scholars, and colleagues, and I have derived great joy from seeing their successes.

Over three decades, I took on rewarding yet demanding administrative roles at research-focused institutions, serving as Chair, Director, and Associate Dean. Among my achievements are several groundbreaking milestones: I became an Associate Professor within three years of my appointment and was the first woman in my department to be promoted to full professorship four years later. I was also the first woman to serve as Chair and to be awarded a professorship in my department, a position I held for two decades. Upon retiring, I was bestowed the prestigious title of Professor Emerita at LSU. My career is characterized by curiosity, dedication, resilience, and a deep passion for learning and leadership.

After 30 years, it was time for a significant change. This shift from mentoring to coaching felt natural. At numerous stages of my professional life, faced with multiple paths forward, I yearned for support beyond the mentorship and advice provided by colleagues and superiors. I needed a trusted confidant untethered by workplace biases, someone with whom I could collaboratively develop action plans aligned with my values, passions, and aspirations—both within and outside the academic sphere. The coaching service I offer is based on something I felt I needed during my career: a stimulating partner who can help me create and follow action plans that align with my values and goals.

Why work with me?

I have accumulated over thirty years of experience in academic leadership, bringing a proven track record of success to my coaching practice. I have collaborated with individuals from diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, and religious affiliations, working across various higher education sectors, including the Rector's office, faculties, HR departments, research centers, and student services offices. Furthermore, I have worked closely with representatives of international institutions and government agencies from all continents. Additionally, I have served on numerous internal and external committees, including those related to research, internal and external promotion, evaluation, thesis, and dissertation.

My understanding of the intricacies of academia and my diverse background position me as an ideal partner for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of their roles and achieve their highest aspirations. Moreover, my experience in executive coaching, particularly in the banking sector, has broadened my expertise and equipped me to provide valuable insights and tailored guidance across various professional landscapes.

Why Coaching in Higher Education

"You perform, you earn a mentor. You excel and show ambition, you hire a coach!”

My mission is to redefine coaching in academia. I aim to transform it into a tool for strategic empowerment, creativity, and excellence, a badge of honor rather than a sign of performance adjustment. To elevate academic coaching to the same level of prestige as in the corporate world, thriving and struggling individuals must have access to a coach who acknowledges and validates their challenges.

People engaged in academia are passionate about learning or facilitating it. They are forward-thinkers, boundary-pushers, creative minds, and visionary innovators driving societal and intellectual progress. However, they are often caught between the conservative nature of learning institutions and their progressive ideals and beliefs. As a coach, I guide them in recognizing and overcoming the challenges hindering their productivity, well-being, and career progression while inspiring them to progress toward their desired outcomes.
